Summary on Grant Application Form
The viscoelastic properties of polymer films spread at the air-water interface will be evaluated by the application of the non-perturbative technique of surface quasi-elastic light scattering. Parameters obtainable are surface tension, surface shear viscosity, dilational modulus and dilational viscosity. The values of these quantities will be compared with theoretical predictions and those obtained by other methods which are unable to investigate the frequency dependence. Using the directly observed capillary wave frequency a loss modulus for the surface film can be calculated, the frequency dependence of which allows a model for the relaxation dynamics of the surface film to be defined. The method will be extended to block copolymers at the oil-water interface and the observation of viscoelastic modes of the surface gelation of associating ionomers. The results will be of relevance to emulsion stabilisation, polymer network formation and provide insight into the dynamics of polymer monolayers.
