Summary on Grant Application Form
There are two basic themes in the proposed research programme: crystallisation and structure, and phase transitions in both polymer blends and flow. In the first theme, a principal ingredient is the continuation and development of modelling the crystallisation of chain-folded polymer single crystals. Detailed computer simulations in three dimensions are necessary to test the usefulness of current crystallisation theories in predicting the shapes, sizes and rates of crystal growth. In this theme we also plan to investigate the effect of chemical complexity on crystallisation, using the hydrogen bond restrictions in the polyamides to examine the effect on the structure and morphology of crystals. In addition, exploratory work on crystallisation from supercritical solvents will be continued. In the second theme, the phase behaviour and morphology of mixtures of homopolymer and copolymer blends will be investigated. This is a continuation and development of successful exploratory work which we have recently published. The results are important for commercial polymeric products and complement and parallel research efforts supported by DSM. One part of this programme will focus on phase separation under flowing conditions, especially flow where the conformation of the molecules change affecting their interactions.
