Summary on Grant Application Form |
The efficiency of VSR in reducing residual stress has been quantified under previously sponsored SERC grants. This proposal will take these results and apply them to 5 real engineering structures in order to verify the basic metallurgical findings. Portable VSR vibratory equipment, stress measurement equipment and a powerful Finite Element package will be used to assess the structural integrity before and after the application of controlled vibratory treatment. The 3D Finite Element package will be used to mathematically model and analyse the structure using a Modal Analysis technique and thereafter corroboration or the simulation verified using an experimental structure analysed in the laboratory. After laboratory verification of the mathematical model the technique will be applied to 5 real engineering structures - supplied by the industrial partners.
