It is proposed to conduct an investigation into the processes which occur during the initial stages (less than 30 minutes) of the growth of alumina and chromia scales during high temperature oxidation at 1000C. The research will identify the regions where impurity segregation occurs and quantify its effects on the development of the scale, on the development of stresses within the scale, and upon any deformation mechanisms which may occur. It is proposed to investigate these scales using a number of techniques including: x-ray diffractometry to measure the elastic strain and thus the stress within the scale; TEM techniques to examine the scale microstructure, the crystal defects present within the scales and dislocations produced by plastic deformation; and STEM and HREM to examine the oxide/substrate interface and the oxide grain boundaries. High resolution TEM, STEM and HREM techniques are required because the oxide scales are thin and segregation previously reported was of the order of 1 atomic layer.
