Summary on Grant Application Form
In the light of recent synthetic and x-ray structural studies at Durham, we propose a systematic study of a new topic for structure-property control in molecular conductors and superconductors, namely intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The special feature of our target TTF and BEDT-TTF donor molecules is that hydroxy or amino substituents, at the periphery of the molecules, can participate in intermolecular hydrogen bonding, thereby increasing the dimensionality of the systems. Radical cation salts of these donors will be obtained by standard electrocrystallisation procedures. We will investigate the relationship between molecular structure, electronic and magnetic properties of the salts, with a view to discovering new families of organic superconductors.
