Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is concerned with a study of the channelling and focusing effects which arise during stress wave propagation in fibre composite laminates. A point load impulse acting on the surface of the laminate sets up a transient disturbance moving away from the load point in all directions. The wave fronts suffer multiple reflection and transmission at the layer interfaces, giving rise to an extremely complex system of waves travelling backwards and forwards between the two faces of the plate. This results in disturbances spreading outwards within each layer in a direction mode which varies from one layer to another. It is possible to have high transient stresses associated with a localized range of directions in an internal layer, with little evidence of this existence on the surfaces. The presence of cut-outs, joins and edge effects can result in stress concentrations and consequent damage at regions remote from the impact location. The objectives are: (i) to predict theoretically and to determine experimentally these directional effects with particular reference to channelling within layers (ii) to study the interaction of the stress waves with cut-outs and delaminations especially with regard to the location of any consequent damage in relation to the orientation of the piles relative to the fibre direction.
