Summary on Grant Application Form
The sieve plate electrochemical reactor SPER combines the functions of gas absorption and reaction in one unit. The new monopolar design proposed will provide good liquid cross flow and improved gas bubble/flow distribution and provide reliable inter and intra phase mass transport rates. These characteristics will be determined and correlated as functions of gas and liquid flowrates and sieve plate and electrode geometry to provide the essential design data. A versatile range of electrode combinations and geometries can be used in this design. An application of the reactor is in treatment of industrial gases containing SO2. The research of a new individed cell oxidation of SO2 to sulpheric acid will determine suitable conditions and materials for this process to be implemented and investigated using the SPER.
