The determination of empirical relationships between grain size/structure and variables such as fluid flow, alloy constitution etc through an experimental and computational study of solidification in a purpose built experimental ring. 2. The assessment, through computer modelling, of the heat and fluid flow fields in DC ingot relationships, which will predict ingot metallurgical structure.
