To develop passive electric and magnetic field sensors for the measurement of high frequency (800 2000 MHz) EM fields in the near field region of a hand held transceiver using semiconductor crystals and fibre optic technology. A detailed literature search comprising both electrooptic and magnetooptic sensors has been completed. More than 700 published papers have been collected and the titles organised and catalogued using a database. The literature review has been compiled in two separate reports. Computer models using Mathematical and C programming language have been developed for both E and H field sensors. Simulation results indicate that sensors capable of monitoring a minimum field strength of 2V/m (E field) and 0.25 -T (H field) can be realised using linear electrooptic and magnetooptic effects respectively. Computer simulation revealed that a polarimetric optical scheme offers the best compromise between sensitivity and optical complexity. All passive E and H field probes using CdTe and CdMnTe crystals respectively have been designed and are at present being assembled. These probes will be used to validate the computer model prediction of the EM field in and around the phantom head. Eight papers have been published so far and four more are in preparation. A UK patent application (P31666GB) has been filed and a US patent application is being filed.
