Summary on Grant Application Form |
Following a new UFC Lectureship appointment at the Institute of Sound and vibration Research (ISVR), Southampton University, funds are requested to initiate work on ultrasonics, expanding ISVR's research into the MHz frequency range. The first objective is to investigate the use of ultrasound for characterising the population of gas bubbles in liquids. The eventual goal of this objective is to combine three very different techniques, which interrogate various aspects of the bubble population. Each has strengths and weakness, and used together will form a premier system to characterise gas inclusions in liquids. This proposal comprises a request for a research assistantship and equipment to develop the first of those systems. Nonlinear combination frequencies involving the subharmonic of the incident sound signal will be used in a device based around a perimeter transducer array, to monitor the population of bubbles in liquids flowing through pipes.
