Summary on Grant Application Form
In outline the experimental approach is to utilise an existing flat flame (McKenna) burner which can sustain sooting flames with one dimensional geometry and to determine the flame structure of sooting methane, ethylene and butane flames. Gaseous samples would be removed for analysis using gc analysis whilst soot samples present in the flame would be sampled using isokinetic sampling probe methods and gravimetric and chemical analyses. Both this soot and that deposited on hot and cold surfaces inserted into the flame would be analysed for chemical composition and for PAH content. The rates of soot deposition in both cases would be determined gravimetrically. The concentrations of soot nuclei and soot number concentrations would be determined by laser scattering experiments.
