The proposed research will pursue an experimental study of lean burn prevapourised-premixed combustion in representative model gas turbine combustors. The experiments will use advanced laser imaging including laser induced fluorescence (LIF) for a systematic study of fuel-air mixing, flame stabilisation, flame structure and associated aerodynamics. The aim of the work is to study generic yet representative combustors and to identify three key roles, namely: (1) fuel-air mixing, (2) enhanced aerodynamic strain designed suppress unwanted auto-ignition in the combustor premixer and, (3) recirculation with reduced strain aimed at stabilising the lean premixed flame. The initial application of such combustors is supersonic transport with the demand for very low NOx emissions within with the constraints of a compact combustor.
