Conventional elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) theory does not satisfactorily explain the lubrication of gear teeth. The presence of roughness on gear tooth surfaces is known to have a significant effect on local stresses and is a factor in the failure of the hydrodynamic mechanism. The project is therefore aimed at developing a thorough understanding of microelastohydrodynamic lubrication (micro EHL) and will advance methods for predicting and designing against contact fatigue (pitting) and scuffing which presently limit the life and load capacity of gearing. The research takes account of the real behaviour of the mesh in terms of roughness, thermal effects and non-Newtonian oil properties and is therefore of direct relevance to prediction of friction and hence efficiency of gears. A specific problem which will be investigated is that of contact effects in spur gears where pitting is often associated with the start of tip or root relief. The experimental programme of work will involve tests on a 140 mm centres gear rig which will enable measurements of surface changes and distress under realistic conditions and provide surface data for the theoretical simulation of micro EHL. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the design unit at Newcastle University.
