Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to explore selected novel routes to potentially useful graft copolymers using existing reactive extrusion (REX) facilities together with proposed additional large scale batch (20 litre) reactor facilities, by reactive modification and subsequent or concurrent grafting of polyolefins, and synthesis of functionalised copolymers by high conversion radical copolymerisation for grafting by REX. The REX processing, reaction intermediates and extruded products will be characterised in order to gain an understanding of reaction kinetics-processing-structure-property relationships. Techniques will include in-line rheometry, FT Raman spectroscopy and thermomechanical analysis. Initial investigation of the effects of surface modification of polymer fibres using RIM of polymer-polymer composites, and the behaviour of graft copolymers as blending agents in twin screw extrusion will be undertaken.
