The present version of the magneto-optic scanning laser microscope designed and constructed in our laboratory has proved to be an extremely powerful and versatile imaging system, used both for specimens originating in Manchester and from other groups in the UK and elsewhere. In this project we intend further to enhance its capabilities and to continue to make its use widely available. The enhancements will lead to advances in the technique and applicability of scanning optical/electronic imaging in the following specific areas: a) By gathering and storing data from a number of sensors in parallel it will be possible to acquire images in a number of different imaging modes simultaneously and in perfect register. This will facilitate much superior noise cancellation and lead to the possibility of magnetisation vector mapping. b) By inserting an electron beam lithographed micro-aperture below the objective lens it will be possible to undertake super-resolution imaging in the near-field scanning mode. c) A light transmission capability at variable angle will enable exploration of imaging using variations in domain wall diffraction such as is produced by vertical Bloch line structures; leading to direct observation of the latter. d) A rotating specimen stage will enable thermal bit-writing and immediate imaging on truly moving media.
