Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme will investigate whether helical peptides can be used to form self-organising supramolecular templates that will enable molecular scale electronic components to be immobilised at precisely located sites in ordered arrays. It will involve i) determination of the best amino-acid sequences and the siting of appropriate complementary side chains using computer modelling and energy minimisation program; ii) synthesis of oligopeptides using FMOC chemistry on an automated solid- phase peptide synthesiser; iii) HPLC pruification and characterisation using NMR, FAB-MS and amino-acid analysis; iv) formation of conformationally confined peptide monolayers from solution by affinity aggregation and specific adsorption of the methionine thioether side chains at clean gold surfaces; v) full characterisation of the self-assembled monolayers by surface-sensitive techniques including ellipsometry, electrochemistry, XPES surfacepenhanced resonance Raman, and infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy; vi) imaging of individual peptide templates using scanning tunneling electron microscopy.
