Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme willl study the microscopic theory of the properties of smectic C liquid crystals, and will complement other work being carried out on other aspects of these materials elsewhere in the country. The results will provide a semi-quantitative link between the work of chemists who design the materials and applied mathematicians who are creating rigorous predictive theories which can describe their behaviour in devices. We shall use density functional theories of fluids of anisotropic molecules to compare steric, dispersive, dipolar and quadrupolar contributions to the thermodynamic and elastic properties of model thermotropic smectic C materials, using the recent elastic theory of Leslie, Stewart and co-workers. The programme also involves extending to the smectic phase the microscopic model used by Osipov and Terente'ev to understand the viscous properties of the nemetic phase, as well as a detailed study of the microscopic basis of the surface free energy of these materials.
