Summary on Grant Application Form |
Time-resolved high and low angle x-ray fibre diffraction will be used at the Daresbury SRS to investigate the development of orientation and crystallinity in sheets of polymer materials as a function of drawing and annealing. The polymers are poly (aryl-ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This proposal builds on an existing collaboration between the Keele diffraction group and ICI directed at developing experimental and analytical diffraction techniques for characterising structural transitions in polymer materials in terms of polymer chain conformation and macromolecular organisation within crystalline and amorphous regions. The electronic area detectors at the SRS allow a diffraction pattern to be recorded and displayed within a few seconds so that it will be possible to perform real-time experiments in which collection of diffraction data is coordinated with the development of thermal and molecular stress within the specimen.
