Summary on Grant Application Form
Muons have been demonstrated to be a unique microscopic probe of matter. When implanted into a material, muons retain their initial spin polarisation and in a semiconductor rapidly attract electrons to form muonium (Mu=M+e-). The muonium trapped at a variety of possible sites, which can be identified by an assortment of spectroscopic techniques. Considered as a light isotope of hydrogen, muonium mimics this element and can therefore be used as a probe of potential sites for hydrogen but with considerably enhanced detection sensitivity. It is proposed to study muons implanted into a variety of amorphous and crystalline semiconductors, carefully chosen to obtain information specific to each. A comparison of trapping sites and behaviour in a-Si, a-Si:H and per-Si has already yielded valuable information and this work will be extended to high temperatures where the spin relaxation rate of diamagnetic muonium can be investigated. Similar studies will be made on ge and GaAs. In these materials, the mimicking of hydrogen will be a prime objective. It is also planned to study the behaviour of muonium in a-SiOHx, diamond-like carbon and a-Sc- preliminary work on these materials has already begun.
