Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme focuses on establishing quantitatively the local structure and interactions in a range of polymer based materials in which second and third components form a vital part of the structure. Examples of such materials include polymer blends, functional polymers, plasticised polymers and guest/host systems. These structural investigations will be performed using quantitative x-ray scattering procedures and will exploit recently developed neutron scattering techniques which allow the correlation functions for specific structural sites to be obtained. These data will be analysed utilising various atomistic molecular modelling techniques ideal for examination of the local structure of polymers. The results for the various systems will form the basis for a framework for the design of polymers for miscible mixtures especially through the means of specific compatibilisers.
