Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme focuses on the development of photoactive liquid crystal polymers and builds on a previous SERC supported programme. In these materials photo-induced changes in the photoactive units are amplified by a liquid crystal matrix and lead to changes in the liquid crystal ordering and reorientation of the liquid crystal director. This proposal centres on routes to enhance the efficiency and time response of such phenomena. This involves the design and synthesis of new chromophores based on immines/oximes and cinnamates and their incorporation into liquid crystal polymers. These materials are designed to exhibit photoinduced phase transitions, rapid photoinduced switching and photo-orientation of mesophases. The programme combines challenging science with the genuine potential for producing polymers with useful applications as smart or intelligent materials in optical technology or as sensors.
