Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme is the systematic exploration of reaction conditions, drying schedules and doping methods (eg solution; impregnation) so that novel sol-gel materials suitable for the manufacture of nonlinear optical devices can be produced. Undoped/doped: alkyl, polymerisable group substituted, and UV-curable ormosils; dried xerogels and partially densified silica will be synthesised. Comparisons will be made on the basis of optical properties, microstructure and material stability. We shall study a range of organic dye and rare earth dopants and also investigate tailoring of the host's refractive index. Central to the project is a postdoctoral assistant with experience in chemical processing for whom funds are requested. To sustain very clean conditions during material fabrication, funds are requested to upgrade to a clean chemical station. The linear and non-linear optical performance of prepared bulk materials and thin film waveguides will be assessed both inhouse and in collaboration with groups at Durham, Manchester and Heriot-Watt Universities. Funds are requested for working visits and to establish an inhouse facility for the critical, optical assessment of thin film, planar waveguides.
