Summary on Grant Application Form |
The study is a theoretical and experimental investigation of active pitch control for horizontal-axis wind turbines. In particular, use of high-bandwidth tip pitch control will be examined with regard to the following aims:1. Alleviation of structural vibration by active damping of blade flap motion.2. Active control of yaw motion by differential pitch action.3. Enhancement of aeroelastic stability for a tip controlled by aerodynamic moment feedback. The work will involve construction of a two degree-of-freedom blade mounting in the Fluid Dynamics wind tunnel. The apparatus will enable active pitch control of a blade tip subject to disturbances in both pitch and heave direction. A tip controller will be designed for closed loop control with respect to pitch position or aerodynamic moment. Controller inputs will include vertical (heave) velocity and pitch acceleration. The control laws required to meet the above objectives will be explored under controlled conditions. Accompanying theoretical work will indicate the appropriate experimental conditions, and control strategies. The laboratory investigation will be carried out in parallel with measurements of blade/flap vibration and yaw error from a full-scale wind turbine, in collaboration with Windharvester Ltd. The field results will be used to verify theoretical assumptions and guide the development of pitch control laws.
