Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed programme of work aims to use our recently acquired knowledge of the behaviour and propagation of electrical discharges in liquid dielectrics as the basis of an investigation into the electrical behaviour of the liquid/solid interface. Initial experiments will be made to confirm this understanding and to characterise discharges which occur in a variety of practical liquids. Shadow photographs and transient current waveforms will form the basis of this work. The various interactions between these varying discharges in liquids with the surface of the solid will then be studied, using similar techniques. Barriers with a fine fibrous structure may be able to break up the penetrating liquid discharges. This hypothesis will be studied and tested. If the solid is not punctured then the propagation of the discharge along the interface can be studied. This propagation may be modified by the topography of the solid surface. Such an effect will be investigated using a range of surface topographies.
