To investigate retrieval techniques for multimedia objects. To develop a prototype for indexing, browsing, and retrieving information from large distributed multimedia object bases in a manner that allows users to create a personalised index to distributed informationProgress:The project has developed software that enables users to create and maintain personalised hierarchical indexes of distributed multimedia objects. The personalised indexes contain references to remote objects, and may be regarded as virtual databases. Users can browse the indexes on their local machine, using personal (text, audio, or image) annotations to identify items. When the user wishes to view or hear a complete object, it is retrieved via its reference. The user has no knowledge of the location or access protocols involved and sees the object as local. Work in the final year of the project is concentrating on the development of automated browsing via a browsing agent that executes stored queries. These queries may retrieve items from the local index by searching on the annotations and may also query remote indexes and remote object stores. In particular, the queries may include embedded sub-queries in other query languages (such as SQL) to be executed on remote object stores. In all cases the browsing agent returns references to objects satisfying the conditions given in the query. The user may then view the objects and install those of interest in the local index with appropriate personal annotations. This project is supported by an additional grant from British Telecom.
