There is no hardening reaction in titanium alloys comparable to the martensite reaction in steels. However a recent BRITE Project designed to enhance the tribological and load bearing capacity of titanium by electron beam alloying has demonstrated that liquid phase surface quench hardening is viable. Accordingly, it is the purpose of the present proposal to examine the physical metallurgy basis for this observation, with the strategic objective of producing a new generation of quench hardenable titanium alloys.
