Summary on Grant Application Form
This application along with other seeks to build upon the success of the earlier collaborative programme on mathematical modelling of continuum behaviour of smectic liquid crystals between Essex, Exeter and Strathclyde Universities and GEC Hirst Research Centre (GR/E 56034, 57353 and 57284) by proposing a further, more ambitious collaboration between Exeter, Hull, Nottingham, Oxford and Strathclyde Universities. The primary objective of the present programme is to exploit progress made by the earlier collaboration and obtain a fuller understanding of the behaviour of certain smectic liquid crystals, particularly the ferroelectric smectic C* phase, including processes of alignment and defect formation in configurations relevant to device applications. The mathematical aspects to be undertaken at Nottingham and Strathclyde fall into two main areas, namely: (a) investigations of solutions of the equilibrium continuum equations for Dupin and parabolic cyclides for both chiral and non-chiral smectic C materials, these analyses to pay particular attention to related defect configurations studied at Hull, (b) studies of solutions of the contiuum equations for chevron structures for both chiral and non-chiral smectic liquid crystals including the influence of electric fields upon such configurations, these predictions to be compared with experimental studies of the optical response of such liquid crystal films at Exeter and Oxford with a view to determining material parameters.
