Summary on Grant Application Form |
To perform an in-depth study of current stream cipher keystream generators and to investigate the possibility of using the complexity theoretic approach to designing practical generators with more suitable security levels.Progress:A thorough survey of keystream generators has been conducted, to include both theoretical as well as practical systems. This has led to the publication of 2 research papers which exhibit successful attacks on proposed ciphers. The feasibility of adapting current proposals for generators based on one-way functions has been investigated. The conclusion is that such ciphers are unsuitable for on-line usage. This conclusion led to the investigation of the design of practical on-line generators based on a pure mathematical approach. This work has resulted in three publications on various aspects of fast sequence generation. In addition to the above 5 publications, the Research Assistant (Dr Simon Blackburn) has submitted a further five research papers for publication, and co-authored two survey articles. He has visited ETH (Zurich) and the University of Bonn and has presented papers at two international conferences.Progress on this project has been excellent.
