Micro-examination of short duration dynamic events is ideally suited to investigations by computer simulated experiments. As a result of incorporating adhesion into the contact interaction laws, processes such as agglomeration and agglomerate breakdown, either by attrition or comminution, are now amenable to investigation by computer simulation. We have been performing computer simulated collisions of 2D agglomerates since 1989. During 1990 we completed the development of a new 3D computer simulation program with which we have now successfully simulated three dimensional agglomerate collisions. We believe that the results of our 2D simulations are very exciting, offering new information on the micromechanics of agglomerate breakage processes. We now wish to carry out an extensive investigation into the micromechanics of agglomerate damage processes using our 3D simulation program.
