Summary on Grant Application Form
The analysis of fluid turbulence remains one of the outstanding challenges of modern physics Variational methods are proving to be a unique tool for providing rigorous information about turbulent flows in the form of inequality results or bounds on physical quantities. My very recent discovery of a unified variational framework has shown how existing results can be systematically improved and generalised. The proposed research will seek to close the gap between existing upper bounds on the energy dissipation in turbulent shear flow and observations using this new unified approach. The novel possibility of obtaining lower bounds sensitive to initial conditions will also be explored as will the recent hypothesis that boundary-driven turbulent flows may strive to maximise their mean dissipation. These variational techniques will be generalised to treat fluid systems carrying heat and/or magnetic fields in geophysical and astrophysical contexts.
