Summary on Grant Application Form |
One of the central goals of modern surface physics is to understand the dynamics of adsorption and reaction of molecules on surfaces at a microscopic level. The recent advent of ultra-fast (femtosecond) lasers has laid ground for time resolved studies of the dynamics of electronically excited molecules adsorbed on surfaces, opening up the possibility of gaining new insights into the way in which reactions on surfaces proceed. The objective of this proposal is to carry out time-resolved studies of the reaction of molecules adsorbed on both well-defined crystalline surfaces and on supported clusters (model catalysts) excited by photons in the ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) energy range. The use of much higher photon energies than applied in previous time-resolved studies will enable the exploration of a variety of channels, not accessible at lower energies, through which adsorbate-adsorbate and substarte-adsorbate interaction occur, including the interaction between hot electrons from the substrate and adsorbed molecules.
