Summary on Grant Application Form |
In recent years new materials such as organic molecular metals, cuprate superconductors and magnetic oxides exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance have been discovered whose interesting and potentially technologically applicable properties cannot be explained within the framework of simple Fermi liquid theory; many body effects seem to be of utmost importance. The applicant proposes to investigate these many body effects as a function of hydrostatic pressure, temperature and/or high magnetic fields by infrared reflectivity measurements, as these measurements will supply valuable information on the charge-dynamics and interactions in these materials when compared in detail with complementary experiments (magnetotransport, uSR magnetism). Such information is essential for the understanding and further development of technologically more suitable materials. For the purpose of this research the applicant will combine different experimental facilities available at her host institute with different optical pressure cells. In oder to overcome the shortfall of most anvil and piston cells of insufficient tunability at low pressures (P < or = 0.1 GPa), the applicant will use the expertise from her PhD research and design a He-gas pressure cell for optical measurements. The proposed measurement system will be unique in its possibilities of infrared reflectivity measurements on new materials as a function of pressure, magnetic field and/or temperature at the same time. Thus, in its combination of new advancements in technology and high quality basic research and considering the potential benefits from the research results, this proposal is of high relevance to EPSRC's mission.
