Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research falls into three broad categories: stochastic techniques in nonlinear pde, infinite dimensional stochastic processes and stochastic models in genetics. In the first category, stochastic techniques will be developed and exploited in the study of solutions to Fujita equations (an important class of semilinear heat equations) and their blowup. The second strand of the proposal is concerned with the general theory of infinite dimentional stochastic processes, especially in the context where the current theory of stochastic partial differential equations breaks down. Specific examples include stochastic models of `interfaces'. The third part of the proposal attacks one of the most important questions in theoretical population genetics: to develop models that describe the genealogy of a population in complex settings. The challenge is to provide mathematically tractable models which incorporate the key processes of evolution (such as selection and recombination), but reflect the essentially finite nature of real populations.
