This proposal constitutes a fundamental scientific study of model electrochemical systems to further the understanding of catalytic reactions and physical processes at the solid/liquid interface. The studies will attempt to link the surface atomic structures of bimetallic alloys observed under `ideal' ultra-high-vacuum conditions to the corresponding surfaces in the more complex electrochemical environment. Alloy systems will be chosen to understand the various phenomena which can lead to catalytic enhancement over single metal catalysts. Single crystal electrodes of reactive metals (Cu and Ni) will also be studied, both in bulk and thin film form, to enable a detailed atomic model of oxidation and reduction to be derived. The programme will employ state-of-the-art experimental methods for in-situ study of the electrochemical interface, primarily synchrotron surface x-ray scattering at the facilities that are available world-wide.
