Why do we have 2 eyes? The aim of this work is to ask some novel questions about the utility of the binocular visual information that is available in the real world. The large literature on binocular vision mostly considers optimal visual performance in the lab, and cannot address the role of binocular vision in a wide range of real world behaviours including our interaction with fast moving objects, rich visual scenes and large depth ranges. I will explore how binocular information is useful for visuo-motor tasks by testing human observers' perception (asking them what they can see) and visuo-motor skills (asking them to point/reach/grasp objects). This work will inform both basic and applied research on human and computer vision. It will further our understanding of binocular vision by moving closer to what we use vision for in the real world. It will also inform work on virtual environments by predicting what information is required for successful use of 3-D displays and what tasks will not benefit from such complex and computationally intensive technology.
