Summary on Grant Application Form |
This EPSRC advanced fellowship is to launch a major study in an emerging field of advanced magnetism spin-electronics in mesoscopic magnetic materials. Within the context of spin electronics, both electron spin and charge will be used in storage media and integrated circuits - an idea based on the very basic fact that electrons have both charge and spin. The main themes of this proposed research are the synthesis of high quality epitaxial ferromagnetic metal/semiconductor (FM/SC) heterostructures, the study of the novel magneto-transport in these mesoscopic FM/SC structures, and then the development of prototype spin-electronic devices based on the above fundamental studies. Two state-of-the-art techniques, namely molecular beam epitaxy and advanced e-beam lithography will be brought together to define the structures and control the properties in nanometer scale. The merits of ferromagnetic materials and semiconductors will be combined in the novel next generation spin-electronic devices. This is believed to be significant and possibly revolutionary for both the magnetic storage and the microelectronics industries.
