The research proposed is an experimental investigation of the behaviour of excitable and far-from-equilibrium systems, which form travelling and stationary wave patterns through the interplay of reaction and diffusion. NMR measurements of flow will be used to observe the manifestation of convection and its effects on pattem formation and travelling wave fronts and velocities. A number of systems will be studied, but with focus on two in particular, the methylene blue and 1,4cyclohexanedione-bromate-acid oscillators. Both display a wealth of spatio-temporal behaviour such as travelling chemical waves, stationary patterns and chaos. Moreover, these systems involve organic molecules in their autocatalytic reactions, which are observable by NMR, allowing their oscillating concentrations to be observed spatially and temporally. Thus by using NMR measurements of chemical exchange and mass transport the interplay between reaction and diffusion can be directly measured, providing unique insight concerning wave formation and pattern selection. A topic of particular interest concerns the formation of Turing Structures in the methylene blue oscillator, which is an area of controversy.
