This Proposal seeks to use expertise I have gained in the synthesis of f-element complexes with unsaturated organic ligands to bind reactive terminal alkynes to structurally well-defined f-element complexes. To support monomeric and therefore reactive complexes, including molecules containing two axially disposed alkynes, we will employ some structure-defining ancilliary ligands - one we are currently making and one that is well-characterised. The unsaturated M-C monomers will be assessed as potential precursors for inclusion of well-defined luminescent centres into new conducting polymers and carbonbased materials. Importantly, the shape of one ligand will allow the metal to be directly incorporated into the unsaturated chain for the first time. By adapting techniques which have been previously unexplored in this area, the synthesis of more complex monomers will also be possible. The Proposal also advances a more academic study of the electron delocalisation across lanthanide ions incorporated in the conjugated carbon chain, and in a related uranium-carbon system. In the latter, redox processes available to the ligand will be exploited to make the first complex containing a uranium-carbon triple bond.The programme is synthetically challenging and progress will most easily be made with significant input from the P.I. in the laboratory, providing immediate support to postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows that will be brought into the project.
