Summary on Grant Application Form |
I propose a study involving the application of mathematics to current research problems in medicine. I propose three specific projects, and in addition to these I will use about 25% of my research time in the study of various problems arising from multidisciplinary collaborations developed in the course of the Fellowship. The three projects are:1. Mathematical modelling of psoriasis focussing on the role of the signalling molecule nitric oxide, which is implicated by new data as having a key role in the process. This will be formulated as a free boundary problem reflecting nonlinear interactions between nitric oxide and blood vessels.2. Modelling of epidermal wound healing, based on new data showing that nearest neighbour signalling plays a key role in this process. The combination of such signalling with cell movement requires an entirely new modelling approach, which I will develop.3. Modelling of cancer invasion, via significant extensions of existing models to include competing chemical gradients and the different adhesive properties of invasive cancer cells. Analysis of this model will be directly applicable to the development of new anti-invasive cancer therapies.Overall, these projects will constitute a very significant contribution to the application of mathematics in medicine, providing a variety of new modelling tools as well as making important contributions to specific clinical problems.
