Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent studies of the B2H6 - RC=N (R = Me, Et and tBu) reactions have revealed them to be a rich source of a surprisingly diverse range of products, including novel CB2N3 rings. These reactions provide direct inexpensive multigram-scale routes to borazines (RCH2)3N3B3H3 1 (30-40% yield) novel heterocycles (RCH2)4N5B4H3(CHR) 2 (30-40%) and homologues thereof. It is proposed to use such reactions as a route into hiterto unexplored aspects of boron-nitrogen heterocyclic chemistry, probing mechanistic aspects, documenting the chemistry of the new heterocyclic systems and exploring their conversion into new types of boron-nitride carbide alloys or boron nitride ceramics.
