Summary on Grant Application Form
This EPSRC Core Equipment capital award aligns with our institutional strategy to maximise research output and impact from capital investment by promoting a culture of resource sharing internally and externally with other universities and industry to enhance research quality, opportunity and impact across all academic levels and Research Technical Professionals whilst ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion.

The proposed core equipment will be used to facilitate and strengthen a wide range of EPS research and training activities at the University of Strathclyde, which falls within EPSRC's strategic remit and is aligned to our strategic themes of Energy; Advanced Manufacturing & Materials; Health & Wellbeing; Ocean, Air & Space; Measurement Science & Enabling Technologies; Innovation & Entrepreneurship; and, Society & Policy. Collectively, the core equipment will enhance the research of many independent academic groups from across the Faculties of Science and Engineering respectively including the following departments: Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Department of Physics, Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry and Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences. This will as a result deliver significant academic and commercial impact and provide potential for future collaborations and funding applications.

The EPSRC Core Equipment Basic award includes the following equipment:

1) Sorting Deformability Cytometer. This will allow us to analyse and sort biological cells in real time, investigating properties for fundamental and applied medical research.

2) Benchtop X-Ray Diffractometer. This will allow us to rapidly examine the structures of various materials across including material science, chemistry, physics, engineering, industry, healthcare, and manufacturing quality control, resulting in better materials devices and manufacturing processes with less waste.

3) Thermal conductivity meter and Gas pycnometer. This will allow us to understand the heat flow properties of various engineering materials, leading to more efficient ground-source heat pumps and new thermal energy storage opportunities.

4) Compact portable photosynthesis system. This will allow us to further understand the interactions between plants, soil and atmosphere and to create infrastructure to utilise this for environmental benefit.

5) UVC Raman spectroscopy. This uses an Ultra Violet laser to investigate the vibration of atoms, which allows access to detailed information of the crystal and chemical structure of materials.

6) iXon Ultra camera. This will allow us to take photographs at very low light levels to study the dynamics of a small number of atoms and to explore the behaviour of the group, which may be harnessed for new technologies.

7) Versatile high-capacity high-speed benchtop centrifuge. This will enable research across a wide range research, spanning areas such as a photonic materials, biosensors and advanced anti-cancer therapies.

8) Shimadzu 2050 Liquid chromatography mass spectrometer. This will enable the optimisation of diagnostics and therapeutics. It will allow us to understand the impact of manufacture processes on therapies.
