The University of Leicester's (UoL) research strategy focuses on discovery-led world leading research, addressing challenges to the planet, industry and society, and this applies to our postgraduate researchers (PGRs), their training, and their experience while researchers here. Drivers of our strategy germane to the EPSRC DTP and PGRs are:
consolidating and growing our globally competitive research capability and capacity
applying our research to reinforce the development and growth aspirations of our regional and national economy
facilitating collaboration with leading academic, commercial and public sector partners
delivering a nurturing environment which identifies, supports and develops future research leaders
developing strong collaborations with industrial partners to enhance opportunities for PGRs and researchers
measuring our success through demonstrable quality and impact of our research
Our strategy in EPSRC aligned disciplines responds to these drivers through 6 key themes representing areas of recognized international reputation, research excellence and critical mass: environment; materials; astronomy, space and Earth observation; life sciences interface; social sciences interface; and data analytics and computational modelling. The latter 2 are cross-disciplinary. Our EPSRC-remit research is largely within these 6 themes, which form the focus for this DTP.
The UoL has flagship initiatives enabling more extensive research collaborations and contributing to Leicester's position both nationally and locally.
Space Park Leicester is a key infrastructure asset within an emerging space sector strategy, enabling the development of a global collaborative community engaged in evolving space and space-enabled technologies, and delivering state-of-the-art facilities for business and innovation, Research and Development (R&D), satellite integration and testing, education and training.
An ERDF-funded Innovation Hub offers a platform for researchers to directly engage with regional business and enterprises. There is the potential for short consultancy style projects supported by this initiative as well as applying research to non-academic challenges.
PGRs can engage with and participate in these initiatives as relevant to their specific research. These activities offer greater opportunities to engage with industrial sponsors and we will seek to maximise opportunities for studentships to be converted to CASE awards or for industrial placements to form part of PGR training programmes to maximise future employment prospects.
