We aim to research and develop a wearable device that can detect musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis, by passively listening for joint noise using a low cost sensor technology.
To do so, we need to understand the difference between a healthy, early disease and severe disease sound signature while the participant is performing well-defined exercises, such as stairs climbing, treadmill walking, and sit/stand.
In this phase, we will focus on osteoarthritis (OA) with the aim of matching clinical measures of the disease, which are usually extracted from more costly processes (X-ray and MRI). We will focus on demonstrating a proof of concept device for a diagnostic setting (e.g. a GP surgery) where the patient can obtain an initial evaluation with similar accuracy to other more invasive techniques. The overarching aim of the research beyond this project is to develop a wearable continuous monitoring device, which will eventually be capable of suggesting appropriate gait corrections to the user in order to minimise joint strain and damage.
