Ionic liquids are salts, composed solely of ions. However, they are generally liquid below 100 degrees Celsius and many are liquid at room temperature. There are millions of possible combinations of ions and these can be tuned to achieve desired properties. Ionic liquids are being investigated for applications such as gas capture, catalysis, lubrication, batteries, light emitting diodes (LEDs) and solar cells. Recently it was discovered that introducing a thin layer of ionic liquid into zinc oxide-based LEDs and solar cells enhances their performance. In this experiment we will study the behaviour of an ionic liquid with zinc oxide. We will determine how the ionic liquid orders on the zinc oxide surface and we will investigate how charge is transferred between the materials.
