Cutting edge microfluidic applications for both health-care applications and high-specification chemical or pharmaceutical synthesis often involve complex fluids and flows with a significant planar extensional component. Reliable, predictable developments in these situations, where the fluid extensional response can give rise to flow instabilities and other deviations from simple, Newtonian flow, require reliable measurements of the planar extensional rheology. Currently, there are no instruments capable of measuring the planar extensional rheology of low viscosity fluids. This project seeks to address that lack by developing a planar extensional rheometer by generating a sheet of fluid and allowing it to thin by capillary forces. After developing and validating the instrument, its utility will then be demonstrated by comparing the planar and uniaxial extensional rheology for a range of fluids of scientific and industrial interest.
