Summary on Grant Application Form
The 2004 International Review of Mathematics highlighted the fact that new PhDs from the UK usually have less breadth and experience than their peers from other countries. To address this problem, our intention is to provide high-quality training of a broad nature to expose beginning PhD students to a wide range of fundamental areas of mathematics and statistics. This will give them a broader experience than has hitherto been provided by the traditional UK doctoral training. Courses will be offered in eight streams (algebra, geometry and topology, pure analysis, applied analysis and pdes, applied mathematical methods, mathematical modelling, probability and statistics). These courses will give beginning doctoral students the opportunity to enhance the breadth of their mathematical experience.
