Summary on Grant Application Form
The lectures will cover all areas of pure and applied mathematics, with the exception of statistics. All of our universities conduct outstanding research, but each, inevitably, has certain areas of specialisation. By combining these strengths, we will be able to create a far more balanced set of lecture courses than would be possible for any of our universities individually. In addition, we will increase audience sizes, thereby making lecture courses viable that would otherwise not be. It is not just economic considerations that currently make it difficult to put on graduate lecture courses: a critical mass of audience size is necessary, in order to generate interaction between students and with the lecturer. This is an added reason why live video links are important in our proposal.
