Summary on Grant Application Form
Businesses and communities develop through successful implementation of new technology. It is widely held that technology transfer is beneficial and should be encouraged, yet there is little theory, and less evidence, particularly for engineering and physical sciences, of what works well in practice and how optimal design is affected by differing industrial and commercial environments. The UK government has increased support for 'third stream' activities, fostering the creation of technology transfer offices in research organisations and universities. But there is no scientific evidence to identify which mechanisms work better than others or how perceived differences in industrial organisation should be reflected in technology transfer processes. This Chair will provide substantial evidence and new ideas, frameworks, models and tools to develop robust mechanisms aimed at improving technology transfer processes.
