Summary on Grant Application Form |
We aim to evaluate the commercial viability of a novel gas sensor based on mid-infrared light-emitting diodes and photodetectors. These new components have been developed within previous EPSRC funded research and are now emerging from the research phase. The proposed work will focus on the temperature sensitivity of the optoelectronic devices and methods for temperature compensation o, stabilization. This is an essential requirement in real instruments and must be adequately addressed before commercialization can proceed. We shall measure LED-detector pair output power and spectral characteristics over the required temperature range (-40 -+50C). Then we shall investigate the feasibility of using dual channel (signal & reference) ratio compensation and determine the residual temperature dependence. Temperature stabilization of the chips mounted on a thermo-electric cooler will also be investigated as an alternative option within the constraint of the overall instrument power requirements for portable operation.
