Summary on Grant Application Form
Two researchers from UCL, Ian Brown (who is working on the DAVID-F proposal) and Taku Fujiyama (who is working with the Accessibility Research Group at UCL, and formerly worked for Japan Eastr Railways) will visit the Passenger Ride Comfort train simulator in Japan. This simulator enables the railway company to study how passengers react to the movement of the train under conditions of acceleration and cornering. It is the only example of such a device in the world. DAVID-F is investigating the feasibility and developing a design for a vehicle simulator which will allow us to study how people move around and interact with the interiors of moving public transport vehicles by using a dynamic simulator. Whereas the Japanes equipment is designed to model only one type of train, the equipment we propose will allow for vehicles other than trains to be represented - buses, ships/boats and aircraft - as well. Nevertheless, it will be extremely useful to be able to discuss various technical details of the equipment and its housing with the people who designed, constructed and operate it. The researchers will return to UCL to complete the feasibility study prior to the end of the DAVID-F project (31 August 2005).
